Villa Obenauer

Restored in time for its 100th birthday Obenauer Villa is one of the most important Saarbrücken buildings from the 20th century. The Peter Behrens designed villa, a highly protected heritage listed building has been painstakingly renovated.

In collaboration with the State Office for Historical Monuments of Saarland the dwelling was renovated to its original state corresponding to today's modern living requirements whilst preserving the original form and with much consideration to the built characteristic of the Behrens design.

All building amenities have been brought up to date, including generous bathrooms and in the attic which previously served as staff quarters has been converted into a modern living oasis in a Japanese style.

A generous Wellness area has been accommodated in the basement of the building, which was put through a complex drying process before this area could be utilised.

The architect custom designed most furniture and built-ins and these were individually manufactured with much attention given to the details. The entire interior arrangement is a tasteful melange of contrastive styles without detracting from the original design.

The result of the 2 year long renovation process is a credit to a constructive collaboration between the owner, the architect and the State office.
Although there were many hurdles, the architect could achieve a state of the art finish within the tight budget.

The garden re-design will be completed by summer 2006.

The villa has been renovated in the sense of Peter Behrens and he would surely be completely content with the end result which will, like in his time, lead to energized lively discussions.
